National Convention of Trade Unions and Farmers’ Organisations to be Held in Delhi on July 29

Lucknow: A major national convention of farmers, workers, and employees will be held on July 29, 2026, at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, following a joint call by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and ten Central Trade Unions. The convention is expected to bring together representatives of farmer organisations, public sector employees, and workers from various industries across the country to formulate a common strategy against privatization and policies affecting labour and agriculture.

Leaders of the Vidyut Karmachari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti, Uttar Pradesh, announced that the gathering will serve as a platform for extensive discussions on several issues impacting farmers, workers, employees, and the public sector.

According to the committee, key topics on the agenda will include the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which it claims is aimed at accelerating privatization in the power sector, the ongoing privatization of electricity distribution companies in several states including Uttar Pradesh, the implementation of the four Labour Codes, and the proposed Seed Bill. Representatives are expected to deliberate on these issues and formulate a nationwide action plan for future campaigns and protests.

The organisers said that thousands of farmer representatives associated with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, along with delegates from employee and worker organisations representing public sector undertakings and various industries, are expected to participate in the convention. The event is likely to strengthen coordinated efforts against privatization, labour-related reforms, and policies viewed by participating organisations as detrimental to farmers.

The Sangharsh Samiti recalled that a nationwide strike had earlier been held on February 12, 2026, under the joint banner of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, ten Central Trade Unions, and the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers. However, it alleged that despite the protests, governments have continued to push ahead with privatization measures, particularly in the power sector.

The committee claimed that the pace of electricity privatization has increased in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, leading to growing concern among power sector employees across the country.

It further stated that if the July 29 convention decides to launch a nationwide movement against power sector privatization, labour-related policies, and measures affecting farmers, electricity employees across India would participate actively and in a united manner.

Highlighting the situation in Uttar Pradesh, the Sangharsh Samiti said that electricity employees have been conducting a peaceful and democratic agitation against privatization for the past 586 days. According to the organisation, many employees have faced disciplinary and punitive actions during this period, resulting in widespread resentment within the workforce.

The committee also renewed its demand that the Uttar Pradesh government implement the provisions of an agreement reached with Energy Minister Arvind Kumar Sharma on March 19, 2023. It urged the government to withdraw all disciplinary and punitive actions initiated against electricity employees during the March 2023 agitation, as well as those taken during the ongoing anti-privatization movement.

The organisation maintained that withdrawing such actions would help restore industrial harmony, trust, and a constructive working environment within the state’s energy corporations.

The July 29 convention is expected to be one of the largest joint gatherings of farmer, labour, and employee organisations this year, with participants seeking to build a coordinated national response to issues affecting agriculture, labour rights, and public sector services.
